Promethium Reactorum (3 Year Project!) To Done!

Forge World Display Team, Here I come! If you've followed my blog over the past 3 years, you may have seen some work in progress pictures of my 12' x 4' cyclical Warhammer 30K/40K battlefield. To complete this project, I have had to learn how to cast, build, airbrush, cut citadel plastic, make large scale washes, and more. Well, I am excited to tell you that over the next several posts (including today) I will be highlighting the COMPLETED project! Today, let's start with an aerial view showing the 6 tiles, each of which is 2' x 4' in dimension. The board - which totals 48 square feet - can be arranged in six configurations since every tile connects seamlessly to the next tile. By taking the last tile as the first, they can be easily arranged with different features at different points of the battlefield. WIP Week: Promethium Reactorum XIII

CUTTING PLASTIC! I promised in an earlier post that I would share my trick for cutting plastic terrain parts. This is especially important for complex connections between board layouts. For the Promethium Reactorum, I had several complicated connections and I wanted to make them fit like puzzle pieces, or at least as close to this ideal as possible. It starts with a simple part like the one above. I used this extra part as an example, and so I wasn't especially careful, but the process is exactly as described below. The most important tool you will need is a reciprocating handheld saw like the Milwaukee Hackzall. The blade I use is very short (2.5") and can be used for anything from wood to metal (I've even used it for cutting the copper pipe for the Reactorum table). WIP Wednesday: Promethium Reactorum V

So far, so good. The tunnel section was fun to see coming together, as I was most uncertain about how this would work. Here's a picture of the layered foam sheets cut to fit over the tunnel. This turned out to be a lot easier than I had expected. I built the tunnel from 1/4" foam core sheets, fit the 1" styrofoam over top with each layer, and then filled the big gaps with expanding foam. I actually cut and fit the sheets into place before gluing them all at once. For the tunnel, it's good to tape it all together with masking tape before gluing. Once the overall shape of the mountain was made, I used the wire brush and knife to shape the foam, glued on some of the rock molds, and then covered the little gaps with the gritty glue mixture.
