WIP Week: Promethium Reactorum XXII

The Mechanicus discovered that the Promethium of Phobov IV was of an extremely pure quality, yet also highly volatile. At the outset, this settlement at the galactic fringe was frequented by aggressive xenos species as well as human and abhuman pirate fleets. With the recovery of an ancient STC that contained plans for battlefield void shield generators, the Imperial war effort required such quality promethium, which served as fuel for the highly demanding reactors. Each reactor was individually constructed at the site of the promethium extraction in order to immediately contain the vast potential energy within.

I cast up 24 of these little reactors to serve as easily movable area terrain. The height is a bit taller than a space marine (about 2x), and so serves as perfect terrain to reduce infantry line of sight.

Painting started with an undercoat of Rustoleum Flat Black spray, which was then sprayed with Citadel Standard Mechanicum Grey and airbrushed with a zenithal highlight of a light grey acrylic. After this stage the reactors were spray coated with a matte varnish

After the varnish dried, each reactor was then washed using black oil paint in white spirits. Again after drying, Aerocolor inks were used to add some weathering. First, the entire model was sprayed with Sepia tone in random patterns. Then, starting form the bottom up, each was airbrushed with vertical streaks of burnt sienna aerocolor ink and then black aerocolor ink.

The base colors were finished by dry brushing each with Citadel Kislev flesh.

Although additional small details still need to be painted (and the casting was not quite bubble-free), I wanted to see how the reactors interacted with the board. I'm still terrain-storming some other ideas (more to come on that), but I think these little reactors give a ton of character to the board and really give context about what is going on thematically.
