WIP Week: Promethium Reactorum XVIII

 The Promethium Refinery

The main colors have been applied to the refinery section. For the building itself, I started with a base coat of a very light eggshell color, to which I then added streaks and shadows using brown, burnt umber, and black inks. It's ok to go a little bit overboard here, as later layers will tone down the variations. I am aiming for a horribly worn look, and so went pretty heavy-handed with grime and soot.

The holding tanks were sponge painted with Yriel yellow over the black undercoat, and then washed with black acrylic wash (home brew). This first coat still requires some details, but it's a great start. The red details were airbrushed on in scarlet ink over the black under coat, drybrushed over with a steel colored metallic, and then washed with the same black wash.

For the metallic features (walkways, pipes), the base coat consists of a metallic steel colored base, highlighted with an ochre ink, dry brushed with the same metallic base color, and then washed with the acrylic black wash.

Extra attention was paid to areas of oily build-up and leaky pipes. Also, a mixed ink of black and brown was used to create shadow around the bases of various features, and in particular under the tunnel structure (the first picture above shows this very clearly). This same color was used to produce the soot on the tops of the smoke stacks.

With the base colors now in place, the next layers would include dry brushing some of the details, and then picking out all of the small details. I plan to get all of the base coats up to this level before doing the details. At this point, the board is playable, though with plenty left to do.
