The Tragedy of Perrux Carnor Part II

Perrux Carnor was one of the first.

This mighty warhound proved to be a stubborn machine spirit, yet the mechanicum priests worked tirelessly to revive her. Using the darkest of machine arts, and with the full support of the Imperial military machinery, Perrux Carnor underwent the Phoenix's Rebirth in time to re-join the war effort against the arch-traitor Horus Lupercal.

The Phoenix's Rebirth was a highly sanctioned procedure of God-Machine revival, re-blessing, and revitalization that was first introduced in the early years of the Great Crusade, and soon forbidden by Mars. Of the high priests of Mars, there were precious few who held the deep knowledge required to both assess the damage of a fallen titan, and systematically revive the most sensitive components. Indeed, there was no single Magos with the knowledge needed to supervise the full process, and this - in fact - was believed to be of the Omnissiah's design. Such a procedure - effective necromancy of a machine spirit - was near tech-blasphemy, and if it was to be undertaken, then it would never be undertaken by a lone rogue priest.

By the time of Horus's betrayal, there were no known Magos with even sufficient partial knowledge of the Phoenix's Rebirth process. That is, until the fortuitous return to the Sol system of the Explorator Fleet known as the Viatrix.

During the Great Crusade, vast fleets of Mechanicum explorators spread out through the galaxy to recover secrets lost during Old Night. One such fleet was lead by three Myrmidax priests of an orphaned Forge Fane on Xana II before the Incursion. This Explorator Fleet was known only as the Viatrix, and no logs of their travels were ever divulged to Mechanicum or Imperial authorities. Upon their return to the Sol system, with the intention of greeting first the Fabricator General of Mars, the Fleet Viatrix was instead intercepted by extremely well-armed, yet unassuming silver-black void ships of unknown allegiance. Of this encounter, no record remains.

Yet, soon after this time, Imperial military records began to note a sudden increase in the number of God-Machines entering service under the banners of the Legio Phasmatis. During the meat-grinder that was the Age of Darkness, no questions were asked, and no explanations given.
